Who We Are

The mission of St. Barnabas is to recognize and serve Christ in all persons.

It’s the people who make St. Barnabas so special.

We are a diverse community of people who are faithful in worship and service. We are welcoming to everyone! Everyone.

The Reverend Douglas K. Bleyle, Rector

Reverend Doug Bleyle is the Rector at St. Barnabas. He served as Vicar of St. Stephen’s in Española since 2014 and as Diocesan Coordinator for Native American Ministry focusing on urban ministry, which he has been active in since 2009. He also served in 2012-2014 eventually as Priest-in-Charge of Bishop’s Ridge/Camp Stoney with a focus and charge by Bishop Vono to renovate and revitalize the camp.

Father Doug is married to Jennifer and they have one young son, Paxton. Doug received his M. Div. from Iliff School of Theology in Denver Colorado 2006 and a Master’s of Theology from Candler School of Theology in 2008. He co-authored a book ‘The Gospels and Christian Life in History and Practice’ Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc. June 2009 and an essay entitled “Creating an Ecology of Reconciliation: Marshaling Contemplative Resources for Rites of Reconciliation” in Ambassadors for God: Envisioning Reconciliation Rites for the 21st Century (Liturgical Studies, 5; New York: Church Publishing, 2010).

Annie, Administrator

Annie is our administrator at St. Barnabas. They are originally from Oregon by way of Ohio, Vermont, Wyoming, and Washington, and have lived in Cortez since 2017. Outside of work you’ll find Annie making art, roller skating, swimming, and volunteering with Montezuma Youth Pride.

Our Musicians

Sue Fredrickson, Ann Haspels, Helen Newman, and Roxanne Rogers contribute to the music making at St. B's on the organ and piano. We are so fortunate to have all this talent to help lead our singing on Sundays.

Vestry and Lay Leadership

Sue Fredrickson, Jan Heyl, Roxanne Rogers, Julie Sturman, and Rhoda Yeager make up our vestry. The vestry sets our bylaws, makes financial decisions, and stewards working groups that support the life of the church.

Rhoda Yeager is our Senior Warden. Our Senior Warden oversees the vestry in the Rector's absence and assists as an advisor to the Rector.

Bob Heyl, Stan Pierce, and Bill Sturman make up our Junior Warden team, ensuring the safety and function of our building and grounds.

Julie Sturman is our Treasurer, overseeing the church budget, accounts, and expenditures.

Sunday School

Victoria Atkins, Jan Heyl, Bob Heyl, and Debbie Meyers-Corona run our Sunday School. All have years of experience working with youth, including at St. Barnabas. We are part of the Episcopal Church of Colorado’s Safe Church program, which includes background checks, policies and training for all program leadership and volunteers to protect the safety and well-being of children, vulnerable adults, and all church members.
